AMSTERDAM TO HOST PPXX IN 2020

The Plastic Pipes Conference Association (PPCA) reports that Plastic Pipes XX Conference and Exhibition will be hosted in Amsterdam 21 -23 September in 2020 at the Hotel Okura. Two spin-off events have also been announced: Guangzhou, China in September 2019 followed by Sydney, Australia in November 2019.

Chair of the PPXX Organizing Committee is Zoran Davidovski, Vice President Marketing & Innovation of Pipelife International. Davidovski comments on the choice of Amsterdam for the next conference: “Amsterdam is a fitting choice for PPXX. The Dutch are world renowned masters in water management. The Netherlands has also spearheaded the commercial development of plastic pipe materials, systems and technology. In addition to leading in the field of plastic pipe collection and recycling schemes, the Dutch have been in the forefront of plastic pipe R&D.”

“Amsterdam is a vibrant and fascinating location for our conference. Its rich history of culture, arts and science are aspects to behold. Also, of interest is that Amsterdam and much of The Netherlands is below sea level. Since the 17th century, the city forefathers have constructed canals to provide transport and drainage. Today, municipal drainage, sewer and water utilities are mostly supplied by modern plastic pipes.”

Dates of the PPCA spin-off events will be communicated shortly. A website for registration, information, sponsorship opportunities and available exhibition space is currently in preparation. Meanwhile information can be obtained directly from conference organizer: Eva Ori at eva@evacon.hu

Chair of the PPXIX Organizing Committee underlined the success of the Las Vegas conference. Sarah Patterson, Technical Director of the Plastics Pipe Institute, comments: “Over 400 delegates from approximately 40 countries attended PPXIX to review 93 technical papers, network at the global level and connect with the 34 exhibiting companies.”

“The world of plastic pipe technology is home to a booming market for ideas, innovation and development. Presentations were of high quality and the forum provided a genuine technical transfer of knowledge and experience from the entire global manufacturing industry.”

Approximately 210 companies attended PPXIX representing many countries. Given that this year's conference was hosted in the USA, a breakdown analysis of attendees pinpoints North America (54 percent) as the major origin of delegates. Nevertheless, Europe occupied second league position with 23 percent of conference participants, followed by Asia (predominantly China) at 15 percent. Countries new to the PPCA conference included Romania, Botswana, Columbia, Peru and others.

MESSAGE TO CONFERENCE – GOOD TIME TO INVEST IN PLASTIC PIPES

A strong conference message will be delivered at Plastic Pipes XIX by technical experts from North America and around the world who will call for significant investment in plastic as the pipe material of choice. Organizers of the event also report that Uponor is now sponsor of one of the conference lunches. The PPXIX Conference will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada USA, at the Red Rock Resort on September 24 – 26, 2018.

Uponor

Uponor is to sponsor one of the conference lunches. Chair of the PPXIX Organizing Committee, Sarah Patterson - Technical Director of the Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI), comments: “Uponor is recognized as an international market leader, striving to provide better plumbing, indoor climate and infrastructure solutions across Europe, North America and in other international markets. In close partnership with building industry professionals, they continuously seek out innovative ways to ensure their systems offer the most efficient, reliable and high-performing solutions available to residential and commercial structures around the globe to enrich people’s way of life.”

Uponor roots are from European innovators that can be traced right back to the 1620's. The company is headquartered in Vantaa, Finland.

Zoran Davidovski who is the Technical Program Chair for the event comments: “Our conference is hosted every two years in North America and Europe on an alternating basis. This year, we have a total of 35 speakers from the North American continent and conference emphasis is clearly on the added value that plastic pipe systems generate across the whole supply chain. Studies will be presented and reviewed from the perspectives of extreme weather and seismic events, scarce water resources and aged porous pipelines made from traditional materials.”

“Performance advantages of our technology are such that new construction and the pipe rehabilitation market have fueled world demand. North America is leading this trend. There has never been a better time to invest in plastic pipes.”

New pipes for old

More than one professor is convinced that this perception is matched by practice. Associate Professor Stephen Folkman from the Utah State University in Logan has undertaken landmark research into the way plastic pipes withstand dynamic earth movements such as earthquakes and landslides. His recent contribution to be reviewed by conference is the most comprehensive survey of utilities carried out across the US to obtain data on water main failures.

This latest work showed that break rates for cast iron and asbestos cement pipes have significantly increased since a similar study was announced in 2012 and that utilities should increase replacement rates of those materials. PVC pipe remains the lowest break rate material when compared with asbestos cement, concrete, ductile iron, cast iron, and steel pipe materials.

During the Las Vegas conference, Ryan Benner, Greg Kodweis and Roger Jordan from the Las Vegas Valley Water Department are expected to endorse the professor's findings with local experience. The district delivers water to approximately 1.4 million residents within the City of Las Vegas and is currently replacing aging water pipelines with new PVC pipelines within a ten-year Capital Improvement Plan at a cost of USD 200 million.

Shaken not stirred

Also noted is that PE pipes are also favored for rehabilitation – especially for their flexible and sustained performance during extreme seismic activity. Conference attendees will closely review a water main replacement project undertaken by East Bay Municipal Utility District in a fire-seismic geohazard zone known as Panoramic Hill, a historic residential neighborhood located in Berkley and Oakland, California. Krista Moita, a civil engineer for the utility project will outline how the district replaced 7,800 feet of primarily four-inch unlined cast iron water mains with 12-inch HDPE pipelines.

Innovation and investment are key industrial drivers and Professor John Vlachopoulos from the McMaster University in Canada will announce improvements in the production process of double walled corrugated pipes. His innovative process design is expected to be of particular advantage in the production of large diameter sewer and drainage pipes.

The preliminary conference program and abstract book as well as information about sponsorship (only one opportunity remains available), online registration link, exhibition and list of registered companies are posted on: www.ppxix.com.

PLASTIC PIPES XIX – MORE NEW DEVELOPMENTS PREVIEWED

Further new developments in the world of plastic pipes are previewed in advance of the PLASTIC PIPES XIX Conference and Exhibition. The event will take place in Las Vegas, US at the Red Rock Resort on the 24 – 26 September 2018.

China is now the world's largest producer and consumer of plastic pipes.Zhanjie Wang, Secretary of the China Plastics Piping Association (CPPA) will deliver a paper entitled Technical Progress and Quality Improvement. His association represents many large scale plastic pipe makers and has actively promoted innovation and technical standards for many years. This in a market where CPPA members have eclipsed small scale pipe makers through focusing on quality manufacturing.

Reference case studies are keenly received by conference – particularly those projects carried out by water, gas or sewer utility companies. Given the location of this year's event, a highly appropriate paper delivered by Roger Jordan (and co-authored by Greg Kodweis) will outline a pipeline replacement scheme undertaken by the Las Vegas Water Department. The state of Nevada is one of the 'driest' geographical locations in the USA. Its modern water management and conservation measures are evoking global interest.

The European Plastic Pipes and Fitting Association (TEPPFA) is undertaking a technical field project to measure the precise behavior of large diameter structured-wall pipes once they are buried in different installation conditions. The study is an extension of the Buried Pipe Project successfully carried out in 2000 on solid wall plastic pipes up to Ø315mm diameter. TEPPFA's Peter Sejersen will report on early results in his paper The Design of Large Diameter Buried Pipes. Conclusions are expected to endorse overwhelmingly the installation of large diameter plastic pipes.

“Pace and progress”

Zoran Davidovski, Chair of the Conference Technical Program comments: “Every two years, our international conference reviews the latest advances in technology and the global industry that makes it all possible.” Patterson explains. “Momentum for our Las Vegas conference is mounting and we expect well over 400 attendees (leaders and technical experts) from around 40 countries.”

“They will not only benefit from the actuality of the information presented but also share in the communication process. Networking is a strong driver behind the pace and progress of our global industry.“

Organizers of PLASTIC PIPES XIX have extended their deadline for the submission of abstracts by two weeks to 15 November 2017

The International Plastic Pipe Conference and Exhibition takes place in Las Vegas, US at the Red Rock Resort on the 24 – 26

September 2018.

Announcing the extension, Zoran Davidovski, Conference Co-Chair/Chair of the Technical Program, comments: “We have already

received some major proposals for presentations and are particularly interested to receive case reference experience from major

water, gas, sewer and telecom utility companies.”

“Plastic pipe technology is constantly evolving to meet an ever-wider range of new applications. New applications particularly in the

industrial sector are therefore of similar key interest.

Davidovski explains that presentation slots for PPXIX are now more competitive since the technical program had already been

reduced from 130 to approximately 80 papers. “The objective here was to provide more time for networking during coffee breaks and

our social program.”

“Our conference is a truly global event and we expect to host at least 500 delegates from over 40 countries. Furthermore, our

exhibition side now features more prominently in scope and scale. Our Berlin conference and exhibition in 2016 was our largest ever

with almost 40 exhibitors.”

Conference speakers and participants are typically drawn from utility companies, pipe manufacturers, raw material suppliers,

consultants, specifiers and technical institutes.

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: 11 Sep 2017

TOP LINE-UP OF SPEAKERS FOR CHINA PLASTIC PIPE CONFERENCE

Organizers of the 5th China International Plastic Pipe Conference have announced a top international line-up of speakers for their event. Hosted jointly by CPPA (China Plastics Piping Association) and PPCA, the conference and exhibition will take place in Hangzhou on 26 -27 October 2017 at the Zhejiang Sanli New Century Grand Hotel.

At least 30 presentations will review the latest business and technical developments in China and from around the world. Zoran Davidovski, spokesman for the PPCA comments: “China is now the largest market for plastic pipe systems – due to major factors such as economic growth, construction and associated development of water, gas, sewer and telecom infrastructure.”

“The CPPA is committed to the highest technical manufacturing and installation standards and papers delivered to conference will reflect that undertaking. Compared to traditional pipe materials, plastic pipe systems offer numerous advantages in the field of sustainability and environmental impact. These aspects alongside the most recent technical assessments will also be reviewed.”

Keynote conference speaker is Wang Zhanjie, Secretary General of the CPPA. His presentation will address 'technical progress and quality improvement' within the China Plastic Pipes industry.

High-pressure PVC-O pipes are used increasingly in China to replace ductile iron water pipes. Peter Sejersen, technical manager for the European Plastic Pipes and Fittings Association (TEPPFA) will present the new draft European standard based on the existing ISO 16422 and existing national specifications in France, Spain, UK and The Netherlands.

TEPPFA colleague, Tony Calton, will present the European Plastic Pipes IndustryRecycling commitment. “For over the last twenty-five years, TEPPFA has promoted a successful closed-loop collection and recycling system for end of service plastic pipes. This system ensures the highest level of quality for plastic pipes made from recyclate.” says Calton.

“This quality-driven approach constitutes a body of experience for China and many other major world markets that is useful to share.”

Scrap waste from the manufacture of plastic pipes is traditionally recycled. However, its production needs to be minimized for economical and environmental reasons. Rob Spekreijse is CEO of Rollepaal, an experienced international firm that makes the machines and the equipment that make plastic pipe systems. His paper will address “The Big Issue in Pipe Production, How to Control Waste as Scrap Rates and Overweight?”

Plastic pipe systems are highly resistant to corrosion. For this reason, they are increasingly used in industrial applications for transporting a wide variety of liquids for example, in the chemical and brewing industries. Conference speaker, Shi Jianfeng from the University of Zhejiang will provide a rare opportunity to review NonDestructive Inspection of HDPE Pipe in Nuclear Power Plants.

Trenchless technology is an ingenious way to reline or rehabilitate aged pipelines without disruptive excavation works. Andrew Robert Wedgner from the PE100+ Association will deliver a paper on The Design and Application of PE100 in Trenchless Technologies for New Installation and Rehabilitation – an Online Guide and Tool.

PVC pipe systems were first commercially installed eighty years ago. Compared to non-plastic pipes, their durability and performance are key advantages. Bruce Hollands from the Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association will closely examine the Life Cycle Assessment of PVC Water and Sewer Pipe and Comparative Sustainability Analysis of Pipe Materials.

Stefan Fokken from Baerlocher, a world renowned supplier of additives to the plastic pipe industry will focus on Highlights on PVC stabilization for Pipes – Comparison and Trends.

Zoran Davidovski points out that the event in Hangzhou is the fifth of such PPCA spinoff conferences held in China. “The first two events were hosted in Beijing and then Xian, and more recently Shanghai. This last conference attracted over 300 participants.”  says Davidovski. “Given the demand growth for plastic pipe in China, we expect a greater number of delegates to attend in Hangzhou.”

Main corporate sponsors of the 5th China International Plastic Pipe Conference are Shanghai Banzan Macromolecule Material Co, Ltd and Shanghai Sinhao Chemical Co Ltd. Additional sponsors include: Zhejiang Shuanglin Plastic Machinery Co. Ltd, Sichuan Goldstone Orient New Material Equipment Inc, Baerlocher and AENOR.

The next main conference and exhibition, PLASTIC PIPES XIX takes place in Las Vegas, US at the Red Rock Resort on the 24 – 26 September 2018.
